the stomach lining is made up of a histological layer (tissue layer) called "mucosa". as we gather from the name the layer constitutes mainly of mucous. the stomach is a site for churning and digestion of food with the help of enzymes like pepsin and hydrochloric acid (HCl). this acid can also harm the stomach muscles causing lesions which we popularly know as "peptic ulcers". the mucosa layer prevents the stomach muscles from coming in contact with the acid thus preventing the occurence of ulcers.
