The dura mater [Latin: 'tough mother'] (also rarely called meninx fibrosa or pachymeninx) is a thick, durable membrane, closest to the skull. It consists of two layers, the periosteal layer which lies closest to the calvaria, and the inner meningeal layer which lies closer to the brain. It contains larger blood vessels which split into the capillaries in the pia mater. It is composed of dense fibrous tissue, and its inner surface is covered by flattened cells like those present on the surfaces of the pia mater and arachnoid. The dura mater is a sac which envelops the arachnoid and has been modified to serve several functions. The dura mater surrounds and supports the large venous channels (dural sinuses) carrying blood from the brain toward the heart.

What three layers of membranes cover and protect the brain and spinal cord?

There are three layers of connective tissues protecting the brain and spinal chord called meninges. the outermost layer is the dura mater, then the arachnoid mater, thhen the subarachnoid pia mater.

What are the meninges of the human body?

the three layers of meninges are as follows: Outer layer(layer closet to the skull): known as the Dura Mater. Middle layer: known as the Arachnoid Inner layer(layer closest to the cerebral cortex): known as the Pia Mater ***The meninges contain cerebral spinal fluid (which is produced in the brain stem) which as a shock absorber. The meninges also provide extra support and protection for the brain.controls involuntary muscle

What is meningeal layer that adheres to the surface contour of the brain?

There are three layers of meninges around the brain and spinal cord (these are continuous between the two structures). The outermost layer is the Dura mater, the toughest and most protective layer. The most superficial tissue around the brain?

The most superficial tissue around the brain is the meninges, which consist of the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. These layers provide protection and support to the brain, with the dura mater being the outermost and toughest layer.
