Psychosis is NOT a diagnosis but a SYMPTOM or set of symptoms that can have many different causes.
Psychosis may be transient, intermittent, short term or part of a longer term psychiatric condition.
Psychosis is defined as a loss of contact with reality. It typically involves at least one of two experiences:
Drug and alcohol use and withdrawal have been linked to psychotic episodes. Symptoms that are drug- or alcohol-induced sometimes fade after the intoxicating effect of the substance has worn off.
Physical illnesses that interfere with brain function may cause psychosis as well. Psychosis is associated with infections, brain tumors, metabolic abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, and dementia.
Psychiatric illnesses, most commonly schizophrenia, frequently lead to psychosis. Delusional disorder, marked by unshakable false beliefs, is another psychotic condition.
Psychosis sometimes accompanies affective disorders such as depression and Bipolar disorder (manic depression). In such cases, the symptoms tend to conform to the patients mood. For example, depressed patients may hear voices telling them to end their life. Bipolar patients in the throes of the illnesss extreme highs may believe they can fly or perform other superhuman feats.
Finally, a stressful event - such as witnessing a violent act or being sexually abused - can produce psychotic symptoms.
when the psychosis does not have an organic basis, but originated from an external source ex. the child ate the led paint off the wall and later developed psychosis his psychosis was not organic but functional because the led pain may have cause it
Stress can cause Brief Reactive Psychosis, and it can cause Depression as well. so perhaps it can indirectly.
Some drugs given for psychosis, such as haloperidol (Haldol) or chlorpromazine (thorazine), may cause parkinsonism
Psychosis is a mental illness. Epilepsy is a physical illness. So there is no direct connection and psychosis will not cause seizures. Someone with psychosis could happen to have epilepsy, just as they could have any illness, but there would be no connection.
it depends on the quantity, but no, only in extremely rare cases does cannabis actually cause psychosis/schizophrenia.
Psychosis may be caused by the interaction of biological and psychosocial factors depending on the disorder in which it presents;
Psychosis not related to organic cause refers to symptoms of psychosis that are not due to a medical condition like a brain injury or a neurological disorder. This type of psychosis is typically caused by mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Treatment often involves a combination of medication and therapy.
Psychosis is a fundamental derangement of the mind for which there is generally no cure. In some cases psychosis develops from outside conditions and the conditions that caused the psychosis can be addressed and in those cases the condition may be cured. Some victims can control their symptoms with a cocktail of several medications which can inhibit some of the symptoms but also can cause extremely unpleasant side effects.
An illness that has a psychological cause and does not involve brain damage is Psychosis.
