From the stomach, the partially digested food passes through the pyloric sphincter and enters the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. In the small intestine, the tiny bumps called villi absorb the nutrients as the food go by. The small intestine is where most of the nutrients are extracted from it through the intestinal walls. The duodenum is specially protected from the acidic chyme coming from the stomach. if the food is fatty, the gall bladder adds bile to the chyme to help break down fats.
