• cold compress or ice for swelling (10-15 minutes on or as tolerated, then off)
• warm salt water -- swoosh and rinse
• soak a tea bag in hot water, let it cool to just warm, then bite on it over the extraction site
• Use narcotics only as prescribed and only if the other measures don't work.

NOTE: Contact the dentist if you have serious pain, continued bleeding, increased swelling, or any hard mass that develops in the cheek near the extraction site.
