The first thing doctors always try is medication. If that fails to control your seizures there are a couple of more options depending on wether your seizures are focal or generalized. There is the vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) for focal seizures. If that fails, the last alternative is surgery. Surgery best treats focal seizures, but can also treat generalized seizures. If you are a qualifying candidate for surgery, it will either decrease or eliminate sezure activity.
Epilepsy or seizures are treated by managing control and reduction in frequency and intensity of seizures using a variety of medications, lifestyle changes, and at times surgery.
Surgeons may try to prevent grand mal seizures by performing surgery to remove the part of the brain where the seizures originate from. This procedure is known as a resection surgery and aims to remove the source of abnormal brain activity leading to seizures. Other approaches may include implanting devices such as a vagus nerve stimulator or responsive neurostimulator to help control seizure activity.
i have had brain surgery and find that my long term memory is fine but short term is not. also loss of words accur for me and i have seizures due to my surgery. after my seizures i am confused and in shock.
In very serious cases of epilepsy, surgery can be used to remove damaged parts of the brain where the seizures are occurring. Once that area is removed there would be less seizures or weaker seizures or possibly no seizures. This is obviously a risky procedure, like all brain surgery, and would only be done where someone has major problems with epilepsy. For the vast majority of people with epilepsy, surgery would not be considered as an option to deal with it.
Split Surgeries are performed to rid a patient of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes chronic seizures. Epileptic seizures are caused by an amplification of abnormal brain activity bouncing back and forth between the two cerebral hemispheres. Separating the two hemispheres, by severing the corpus callosum, makes the seizures go away. The first patient who had a split brain surgery joked afterwards that he had a splitting headache.
There are many forms of epilepsy and levels of severity. Some people that get epilepsy when they are young stop having seizures when they are older. Some people get epilepsy as a result of a head injury and that in time can improve and so they stop having seizures. Some people can have surgery which can cure their epilepsy, though that would only be considered in very extreme circumstances. Some people will have epilepsy for the rest of their lives and it can't be cured. Some will have controlled by medication so they may not get many or any seizures, though they will still have epilepsy.
Epilepsy Surgery isolates or removes the area of the brain that triggers your seizures. This surgery is only considered if at least two drugs have failed to solve the problems.
The major sign of epilepsy is seizures. When you have had more than one seizure, neurologists will do tests (MRI and EEG) to locate the trigger point of the seizure. Depending on the type of seizure you have, they will then start you on a medication. If medication fails to control the seizures, there are other alternatives. These include the ketogenic diet, VNS, and surgery.
Some of the complications associated with surgery are swelling of the brain, infection, seizures, memory loss, headache , difficulty concentrating, and chronic SDH.

The most common type of surgery is the focal cortical resection. In this procedure, a small part of the brain responsible for causing the seizures is removed.
