I nominate eyeglasses. Defective vision is so widespread that without the means to correct vision, people in every walk of life and in every craft and profession would have been severely restricted in their activities. Much of what we have achieved in the "modern" world depended on the ability of people to see clearly. This is not to say that blind people are helpless. On the contrary, blind people are as productive as are those with so-called "normal" vision; sometimes more productive. And as they point out, they can do "everything that anyone else can do except see." We might speculate about how the world would have developed if our species depended solely on senses other than vision. But as turned out, the technology that gave us the ability to maintain and improve vision served as a platform for many of the great "modern" achievements.
