The idea that shampoo may cause breast growth springs directly from an article in the New England Journal Of Medicine, claiming that shampoos or bath oils containing lavender or tea tree oil may have been responsible for 3 cases of breast development in boys. This story spread rapidly around the world, encouraging girls as well as boys to believe that some shampoos and bath oils could promote breast development.

It is important to state the facts on which this article was based, which are that one doctor in one town became aware of 3 cases of breast development in boys, leading some scientists to conjecture that the cause was the lavender and/or tea tree oil in their shampoo or bath oil. Many other scientists have raised concern and alarm at this article, in particular the poor methodology and conclusions which are certainly not supported by science. Even one of the authors of the article has pointed out that the article did not conclude that either lavender oil or tea tree oil was the cause of the gynecomastia in the boys, but just said that there "may" be a correlation.

It seems that one conjectural article was whipped up into a story by the world media and in reality there is no evidence to support the idea that shampoos or bath oils can cause breast growth, in either boys or girls. Most scientists who have commented on the story take the view that there are insufficient grounds to give it any credence and accordingly that it should not cause anyone to change their choice of toiletries.
