You should always check the scene before entering. There could be a gas leak or other toxic chemicals in the air which caused the victim to become unconscious. You should also make sure there is no fire, or other life threatening circumstance's. Once you have checked the scene to make sure it is safe you should always wear and use protective equipment, such as gloves, goggles, scrubs, and resuscitation masks or shields. Be sure to wear or use these to protect yourself from viruses, and deceases.

When giving a rescue breath to an adult you should give the breath over a period of about..?

Give the breath over a period of 1 second. You do this until you simply are to exhausted and unable to do it any longer. There is no time limit. You do this until proper help (rescuers) arrive. If person starts breathing by his own strength, then you stop, but you monitor until help arrives. If a person get only a little bit of oxygen all the time from you assisting breathing, then this can be worth gold when rescuers arrives. This prevents brain damage for one, and is the one main reason to carry on until rescuers arrive.Heart may have stopped too, so applying heart compression could be an addition to the situation.Learn how, it might be saving a life.
