You should take a pregnancy test if there's a chance that you could be pregnant. If there's not a chance that you're pregnant and your next period is late or missing you should see a doctor to get checked out early on in case anything's wrong (which is unlikely).
It could be late because you are either stressed , not eating right or maybe you're on medication. It could be a few factors. If you think you're pregnant wait 3 weeks after sex to take a pregnancy test because that is when the levels of pregnancy hormone will be high enough for a test to detect. If you missed your period and didn't have sex it might be what I mentioned above earlier about stress and not eating properly.

In theory, you can't since you got your period which means that the zygote did not settle or the ovule was never fecundate. However, this is kinda weird since there is, for all women (and girls) exactly 14 days between the release of the ovule and the start of the period.
