There really isn't a 'gene' for twins. However, fraternal twins are the result of a woman releasing two eggs at a time. This trait can run in the womens side of the family so there is more chance her daughters will release 2 eggs at a time.

To date there is no indication that identical twins have any genetic markers. All women have a chance of having their eggs split and having identical twins.

No. Twins happen randomly, but if there is a high number of twins in the family, you are likely to have twins.

What are twins called when they don't come from the same family?

Twins that do not come from the same family are typically referred to as "foster twins" or "social twins." This term describes children who may have been placed together in a foster or adoptive setting, forming a close bond akin to that of biological twins. Additionally, they can also be referred to as "friend twins" when two unrelated children share a particularly strong friendship that resembles the bond of twins.

Chances of having twins if your aunt had twins?

Having a family history of twins, particularly on the mother's side, can increase the likelihood of having twins, but the influence varies. If your aunt had fraternal twins, it may suggest a genetic predisposition, especially if it's a trait that runs in the family. However, identical twins are not influenced by genetics, so the chances remain largely the same regardless of family history. Overall, while there may be a slight increase in the odds, it is not guaranteed.

Can you still have twins without having them run in your family?

doubtful Yes, only fraternal twinning (caused by releasing more than one egg) has a genetic connection, and that connection only holds on the mother's side. So, many twins are born with no family history of twins at all.

Do fraternal twins only run on mother's side?

Yes. Fraternal twins are due to two eggs being released. No - If they are on either side of the family, the incidence of twin pregnancy is increased, whether they run on the mum's side or the dad's side. And in addition to the above answer, fraternal (non-identical) twins are due to two different eggs being fertilised by two different sperm.
