I am a teacher of 11-18 year olds and unfortunately this is a very common condition amongst youngsters.

The first thing that I'd really want to know would be what is causing her to be stressed at such a young age - friendship concerns, school work, family break up, loss of a loved one. The cause of the stress will help determine how it is dealt with.

The most important thing would be to get her to open up and as difficult as this may be for you, you may not be the person she wishes to confide in. Start by asking simple questions such as 'How was your day?' and 'What would you like to do at the weekend?' - let her know that you are interested in her life. As she opens up about the smaller things you can try to delve a little deeper and ask slightly more probing questions. If she seems uncomfortable at all then take a step back and wait for her to relax before continuing the discussion.

Another thing which often helps youngsters is having a 'thought book' (or diary) where she can write all of her thoughts and feelings. This gives the same sense of catharsis as discussing a cause of stress. If the youngster does decide that this would benefit her, then it is imperative that the book is for her eyes only unless SHE decides otherwise.

However, the most effective stress reliever I know is having fun! Exercise, even just walking or biking, is proven to reduce stress. Encourage her to laugh, play, exercise, talk to friends, and do what she enjoys doing. Singing (choir or school chorus) provides a wonderful way to "use your voice" even if not speaking about your problems.

The key, of course, is to use healthy ways to reduce stress. Any teen who seems unable to cope and starts to use unhealthy coping deserves access to a counselor, such as the school guidance counselor.
