An AED does two things:
1. Analyze the heart rhythm
2. If necessary- prompt the AED to deliver shock to the heart. (Shocks attempt to restart the heart).
Source- I am going though CPR training and I recently learned this
The two rhythms an AED will only shock are Ventricular Fibrillation (V-Fib) and Ventricular Tachycardia (V-Tach).
Always. If you witnessed the collapse, immediate application of the AED offers the best chance of successful defibrillation. If the patient does not need defibrillation (only two heart rhythms are shocked by an AED), the AED won't attempt it, so applying one can't hurt, and it may save a life. Hook up the AED when the absence of a pulse is confirmed.
One can buy a portable defibrillator (AED) online and at medical supply stores. Two online retailers are Heart Start Home and American AED. Heart Start Home sell the Phillips brand AED. American AED has a selection of brands to choose from.
An AED certification is a certification that you have been trained in the proper use of an AED.
To use the AED, first turn it on. Place the pads on the patient. (and plug the pad leads into the AED if required). The AED should analyze at this point; now follow the instructions of the AED.

A church can have an AED. Ours does.
The first thing you should do when preparing an AED for use is to turn it on. Some AED's will turn on when they are opened, or you will have to push a button to turn it on. Once the AED is on, the AED will give instructions on what to do next.
Do not use the AED if the person has a pulse.
An AED will have 2 pads
