Smoking is a contributor to the development of cancer and there are many other carcinogens in the environment that are also linked to cancer. Asbestos is one that is quite certainly connected to cancer. However, neither of these activities in and of themselves causes any one person to develop cancer. Some people smoke and never get cancer. It is still not known what causes some people to develop cancer while others exposed to the same things do. However, it's well documented that the chances of developing cancer are greatly increased by exposure to items like smoke and other carcinogens.
