Cartilage actually covers all surfaces of bones but the articular ends have an additional form that is metabolically quite active in that it contains multiple cell types all with differing functions. Some of these cells produce a portion of the joint-lubricating synovial fluid, while others are merely structural and protective of the underlying osteoblasts lengthening bones by building on to the epiphysis (growing end). The type of cartilage covering the diaphysis (shaft) of the bones is referred to as the periosteum and whenever this membrane is damaged (skateboarder hitting a tree stump, for example) the resulting injury is termed 'bone bruise' and may lead to serious complications such as osteonecrosis. On the other hand, severe damage to the cartilaginous end plates of the epiphysis can result in death of the growth zone and a failure to elongate as maturation proceeds.

The smooth flexible layer of tissue covering the ends of bone is?

Hyaline cartilage is a type of tissue found at the ends of some bones. It is an amorphous (chondroitin and glucosamine) matrix that surrounds cells that are called chondrocytes (within lacunae). It acts as a support and as a cushion. It has little blood supply and because of that it heals poorly.

Hyaline cartilage is the most common, abundant type of cartilage found in the body.

Is Fibro cartilage is the most common type of cartilage in the body?

No, fibrocartilage is not the most common type of cartilage in the body. Hyaline cartilage is the most common type and is found in areas such as the nose, respiratory tract, and the ends of long bones. Fibrocartilage is found in structures like intervertebral discs and pubic symphysis.

Which area that contains glassy hyaline cartilage that provides a smooth slippery surface which decrease friction?

The area you are referring to is likely the articular cartilage found at the ends of long bones in joints. This type of cartilage is composed of glassy hyaline cartilage and helps to reduce friction and allow for smooth movement between bones in the joint.

What type of joint uses cartilage to connect bones?

A cartilaginous joint uses cartilage to connect bones. This type of joint allows for slight movement and can be found in the spine and between the ribs and sternum. Cartilaginous joints provide support and flexibility to the skeletal system.

What type of cartilage covers the articulating surfaces of bones?

there are 3 types of cartilage. 1Hyaline cartilage: This type of cartilage has very thin fibers having same refractive index as the matrix of the cartilage and thus these fibers are not seen. Hyaline cartilage is the articular cartilage of long bones, sternum, ribs etc. Its color is bluish white and it is flexible. 2Fibrous cartilage: This type of cartilage has numerous white fibers. It is present in the symphysis pubis, and sternoclavicular joint etc. Its color is glistening white and the appearance is opaque. 3Elastic cartilage: This type of cartilage has numerous yellow elastic fibers. It is present in the ear pinna, external auditory meatus, Eustachian tubes, and epiglottis etc. Its color is yellowish and the appearance is opaque.

What is the type of ossification in bones preformed in cartilage?

Endochondral ossification is the type of ossification in bones that are formed in cartilage. This process involves the replacement of cartilage by bone during development and growth.
