A dialysis machine acts as an artificial kidney. The machine takes in blood from the body, removes certain byproducts (ammonia, salts, unwanted proteins) and then circulates the purified blood back to the body. In this way a person with impaired kidney function can remain relatively healthy and happy. Without the machine, a person with non-functional kidneys would die in about a week. A person with very low kidney function (under 5% or so) will have severe restrictions on activities and feel weak and sick all the time, even with stern restrictions on diet.

Most kidney damage occurs from bacterial sources (strep, for example), Diabetes (a complication of high blood pressure), and from excessive toxins. Extreme dehydration in another cause. Dialysis does not 'cure' kidney disease but it makes the condition livable.
