I consider myself a happy person but I am also suicidal. It doesn't make sense and it doesn't have to. Self harm is a way to self-soothe. There are many different ways people self-soothe, and that is one of the more drastic ways to make yourself feel better. It's nothing to be ashamed about but it is a sign that you need some psychiatric help, probably medications. Or you can research other ways to treat depression such as hypnosis, vitamins (chromium, magnesium, vitamin D, DHEA), acupuncture, and even cold showers.
