blood can still return via the deep veins
Elongated superficial dilated veins, are called Varicose veins.
The superficial veins are the blood vessels most often affected by varicose veins and are the veins seen by eye when the varicose condition has developed.
True varicose veins are formed when the largest superficial veins become distorted and twisted by a long-term rise in blood pressure in the legs.
As long as the deeper veins are still functioning properly, a person can live without some of the superficial veins. Because of this, stripped varicose veins are not replaced.
Edema of the surrounding tissue, ankles, and calves, is not usually a complication of primary (superficial) varicose veins and, when seen, usually indicates that the deep veins may have varicosities or clots.
A flexible wire is inserted through one end and extended to the other. The wire is then withdrawn, pulling the vein out with it. This is called "stripping" and is the most common method to remove superficial varicose veins.
There are three major categories of veins: superficial veins, deep veins, and perforating veins. All varicose veins are superficial veins; they lie between the skin and a layer of fibrous connective tissue called fascia.
Varicose veins can develop in the deep veins also. Varicose veins in the superficial veins are called primary varicosities, while varicose veins in the deep veins are called secondary varicosities.
A varicose vein is an enlarged, twisted superficial vein. They can occur pretty much anywhere on the body, but mostly on the back of the lower legs.
Deep veins will distend also, but not as much due to the increased pressure on them. superficial veins are under much less pressure being closer to the surface and away from muscles, so the distension is much more obvious.
A specialist can use an injection into the veins that "shrinks" them - other non swollen veins will take over for the ones the MD has injected. There is an older process called stripping where the veins are actually surgically removed.
