Body image and appearances have almost always been essential and important, especially to women. Though not an officially recognized disorder until the late 1800s, eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia can be traced in records back to the ancient Romans, Middle Ages, and earlier. As society became more focused on looks as the centuries went on, appearances and consumerism grew, as did the pressures of society to look as certain way. As a result, eating disorders also grew and became more recognized medically.
