The old view was always to leave the operation as long as possible but thinking has now changed. A painful, arthritic hip will continue to deteriorate whilst waiting for surgery with the possibility that the operation will become more difficult. In addition the other hip is likely to be affected as it will be doing most of the work.

Quality of life is now the best indicator. How much is your hip condition affecting your ability to work and play. Can you still take a stroll in the park, eat out in a restaurant or sit through a movie? Can you still pick up your children when they need a hug? How far are your daily activities hindered because of your hip?

The current thinking is that the best time to have a hip replacement is when the loss of quality of life outweighs the pain you are experiencing.
