When making ear defenders why do hey have a hard plastic outer case?

Plastic (in conjunction with a couple of other materials) is a good choice for ear defenders for a number of reasons. First, it's tough and effective. It's also fairly cheap, readily available and easy to work with. Plastics come in a wide variety of types and with as wide a range of characteristics. Can anyone lookaround himself in a day and not see something made of plastic that is in use? Plastic is an excellent material from which to make ear defenders.

Because termites don't work? Foams contain gases. Transmission of sound requires compression. Compression of lots of little pockets of gas is lossy, which will deaden sound energy being transmitted. And plastics can be impervious to "ear wax", and not serve as a stable, easily cleaned, growth-retardant medium to protect the ears from infection.

Rubber is good because it is has a lot of air bubbles in it. Sound takes a long time to travel through gases like air so rubber would be a good material to make ear defenders out of. Also some of the sound may reflect off the rubber.
