They should see a doctor right away to at least get a "base" on their heart rate. Many people have fast heart rates and it doesn't mean they are going to have a heart attack or stroke. I know several people with fast heart rates and they are just fine. Some people can actually have a slow heart beat (I do) and there is nothing wrong with my heart, but I went to a Cardiologist and got a "base" so if any irregularities should show up in the future the doctor will be clued in quicker. Each individual is different. Get your Cardiologist to explain the heart to you and why your heart can beat faster, slower or you feel like you may have skipped heart beats. Once you learn about it you won't worry so much. Cardiologists are worried about the chambers of the heart functioning well, blood vessels, and also clotting time.
It depends on the adult's age, and weight. If you Google it, you should find a few tables, or programs to calculate what your heart rate should be. Anyway, heart rate is not your main concern, as it varies from person to person, you should worry more about things like cholesterol.
At rest a heart rate of more than 100 is fast. A heart rate of more than 100 BPM is sinus tachycardia. In medicine sinus tachycardia is a heart rate of more than 100 BPM. If it is asymptomatic it does not usally need treatment. However if a resting heart rate of 114 BPM causes chest pains or other problems treatment should be given.
36-42 beats per minute
To reduce a fast heart beat, try deep breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and avoiding stimulants like caffeine and nicotine. If the fast heart beat persists, consult a doctor for further evaluation and treatment options.
A healthy Adult horse's heartbeat should have a resting pulse of 36-40 beats beat per minute.

According to some sources, the normal resting adult heart beats regularly at an average rate of 60 times per minute. If your heart rate does not exactly match that number, it does not necessarily mean that you are sick. Obviously, you had better check with your doctor for an accurate diagnostic. == ==
