The origins of yellow fever most likely lie in Africa. It is thought that the virus originated in East or Central Africa and spread from there to West Africa.

Many people believe that it initially was a fairly harmless virus that lived in monkeys and mosquitoes and it was only the arrival of Europeans at the dawn of the slave trade that caused the virus to jump into humans and thus spread to other continents.
