What are treatments for smallpoxs?
Siga Technologies, of Corvallis, Oregon, has an antiviral that
can cure smallpox even days after infection. It's called
Tecovirimat. It's proven safe in human testing and 100 percent
effective in animal testing. Recently the US Government announced
that it wanted to buy Tecovirimat, but the purchase has been held
up by a protest from another company, a private company called
Chimerix.
Tecovirimat, in fact, works against not only smallpox but all
diseases in the pox virus family, including monkeypox and vaccinia
(which is the close relative of Smallpox that has long been used in
vaccinations). On several occasions Tecovirimat has been effective
in Emergency Use when the vaccinia from vaccinations has caused
open sores -- and almost killed a two year old in Chicago.
Tecovirimat will soon be stockpiled all around the world as a
defense against bioterror poxviruses.
