Nobody knows, it has been around since the beginning of time. They have records of cancerous growths in mummies... but we don't know where the disease came from exactly.

There is a common misconception that cancer is a single disease, like

smallpox or tuberculosis, in that it is caused by a single pathogen.

Cancer is in fact the generic name for all forms of malignant tumors.

There are thousands of different cancers. Depending on the type of

cell that spawned it and the error that was made in the DNA.

Now errors in the DNA happen very regularly as your body cells

reproduce. However most of these are so drastic that the resultant

cells are not viable and quickly die off. Others get caught by the

body's immune system as they now no longer look like part of you. (The

immune system's default setting for any unrecognized things is - kill

it.) Some errors still get through and produce what are called

'benign' tumors. There are usually fairly harmless, unless they

appear in an awkward place and begin to get so big that they interfere

with the function of organs.

Lastly we have the malignant cells. They have the ability to break up

and send copies of themselves all over the body, where they set up

shop and continue reproducing. Current methods of treating cancer work

as follows.

If you can catch it before it spreads, it can be totally removed by

surgery.

However if it has started to spread then they try to find something

that can kill the cancer cell but not the patient. Some cancers are

susceptible to radiation, some to chemicals which are lethal to fast

growing cells, others are sadly unaffected and the patient dies.

Even when every cancer cell has been removed from the body it is

possible for the same error to occur again and start a brand new

cancer, as some people are susceptible to making these errors.

Sadly I doubt if a single cure for all forms of cancer will ever be

found as it would be like finding a single cure for all forms of viral

infections. We will just have to wait while they chip away at the

problem.
