the spirit goes to heaven if the person it belongs to were born again before they lost their mind. but unfortunately, they will go to hell if they were not born again before they lost their mind. everyone has a chance to confess their sins and ask jesus to forgive them before they die. whether it takes 1 second to die or 1 year they all had their chance. if they were retarded then that's another story. all retarded people will live in heaven if they are not capable of making a decision on their own.
The below is an additional response to the question and response to the initial answer above:
Let me first say, I am NOT THE AUTHOR OF THE FIRST RESPONSE ABOVE.
Assuming that his question was intended to be from a Christian view point, not any other religion, I have several questions for the responder of this question. Now those of other religions, please don't misunderstand me, but from this point further, that would relieve you from this discussion.(You shouldn't mind, being that Christianity isn't your view point anyways.) Okay! Now, that being said, let's talk about this.
You are saying that a person has no hope of salvation if they did not receive prior to losing their mind. Let me ask, as should be expected, where is this found in God's Word? As far as I know, there is no scriptural basis at all for this statement, but seems to be more of an assumption based soley upon your own fleshly logic, intellectualism. Secondly, The Bible tell us that God is a Spirit. Jesus said so and told us that we must follow Him in the Spirit. Now we know from the Word that we are not to live in the flesh, but walk in the Spirit of God. This is where he deals with us, in the deep parts of us, not our flesh man. So to say that because a person has lost contact with their own being because of the flesh (in this case Alzheimers), and that God can no longer deal with them deep down in their spirit because of that, simply is not true. The spirit man lives inside these "earth suits", these human bodies. God deals with the spirit of a man. Just as the temple had three parts, the outer court, the inner court and the most sacred Holy of Holies, so we as people are the same. Body (outer court), Mind (inner court) and Spirit (Holy of Holies). The Word says we are the temple! Can you see that now? If we are the temple, and He deals with us in our Holy of Holies, and dwells there, not in the flesh of who we are, then absolutely a person can be saved as God deals with them in their Holy of Holies while their flesh mind may be "long gone." God loves that much

You can check out the Alzheimers Association for information or talk with your Grandmothers doctor. Alzheimers Association would have a check list of questions that you can use to talk with her doctor.
