Ebola normally start with someone eating an infected animal; in nature the virus has been found to live in some small jungle animals such as bats and monkeys. These animals are carriers and are not affected by the virus.

In some rural areas people eat "bush meat", basically animals caught in the wild, prepared and then eaten. By eating the contaminated (possibly under prepared) meat the virus is then spread to a human host where it propagates.

Infected humans can spread the disease to other people through body fluids (saliva and blood). Initial stages of infection are general body pains and flu-like symptoms, so are easily missed by doctors; eventually the virus affects other organs in the body, and the symptoms change to hemorrhaging (normally followed by death).

The virus is extremely virulent and at present has no known cure; there are a number of strains of the Ebola virus, some worse than others (up to a 90% mortality rate).

Normally outbreaks are short lived and relatively contained due to the fast acting nature of the virus - from infection to death can be as short at 7 to 10 days.
