No one coined the term, as it is from the same Latin root as sterile and sterility. However, Louis Pasteur was one of the first to use heat sterilization to kill most bacteria, a process known as pasteurization. Previously, in 1795, Nicolas Appert had similarly demonstrated that heated food could be "canned" in glass jars to avoid spoilage.
