There have been a number of individuals, unsung heroes, who have played an important role in the treatment of the Polio virus.

The first two people are Dr. Drinker and Dr. Emerson; they played a critical role in saving the lives of those with Poliomyelitis, aka Infantile paralysis; this form of polio causes respiratory distress leaving the patient unable to breathe on their own. In 1929, Dr. Phillip Drinker and his partner Louis Shaw from Harvard University devised and introduced the tank respirator which was called the Drinker Respirator, better known as the "Iron Lung."

In the 1940's, another doctor, Dr. John Emerson, began his efforts in revising and simplifying the Iron Lung. He created a smaller less expensive version (of the Iron Lung) that was more cost effective for hospitals, and consequently more affordable for patients.

Another person who presented an efficient and practical treatment for polio was Sister Elizabeth Kenny. In Australia, she set up her own innovative and radical treatment program (later known as the Kenny Concept and Treatment), where she treated polio victims.

And finally, there are the two individuals who played the most important role in the battle to stop polio. Rather than a "successful treatment," they offered prevention. The first of these two individuals is Dr. Jonas Salk, an American who offered a vaccine by injection, containing a 'dead version' of the virus.

Dr. Albert Sabin followed Dr. Salk's lead and, in 1961, developed an oral polio vaccine. He used a 'live version' of the polio virus, believing that his version would be more effective, whereby offering more protection than the prior vaccine.

Few diseases frightened parents more in the early part of the 20th century than did polio. Polio struck in the warm summer months, sweeping through towns in epidemics every few years. No swimming or playing outside on hot days. Though most people recovered quickly from polio, some suffered temporary or permanent paralysis and even death.
Many polio survivors were disabled for life. They were a visible, painful reminder to society of the enormous toll this disease took on young lives. Polio is caused by one of three types of poliovirus, which are members of the Enterovirus genus.
Polio is a highly infectious illness that spreads through contact between people, by nasal and oral secretions, and by contact with contaminated feces.
There is a vaccine for it. It was developed by Jonas Salk. But a better one was developed by Sabin. The Salk vaccine was given by injection while the Sabin was given my mouth. Many parents gave both when they first came out just to be absolutely sure.
Polio has no cure, so prevention is the most effective means to combat it. Certain drugs and therapies can offer supportive care for patients to counter some of the effects of muscle involvement. Patients who progress to paralysis of muscles involved in breathing receive artificial breathing support, which could be discontinued if the patient regains use of the affected muscles.
Ask your grandparents about the 'Iron Lung' and try to imagine living (if you can call it living) in one.
