Okita Souji was the captain of the first squad in the Shinsengumi, a Japanese special armed "police" force that fought in the Meiji war on the side of the shogunate. They weren't really police, but were known to try to keep things peaceful, so they are acknowledged as such. His birth name was Okita Soujiro (Okita being the family name) but he changed it to Souji. He was very good with children (who all still called him Soujiro so as to avoid them knowing who he really was, which would be very dangerous for him if the Isshin Shi Shi found out. He was also apparently very handsome. He was the most skilled swordsman in the Shinsengumi, and was a child prodigy that showed exceptional skill from the time he first began at Kondou's Dojo when he was nine years old, and was a master swordsman at the age of 15. Unfortunately, he contracted tuberculosis shortly after the formation of the Shinsengumi, which was, back then, incurable He tried to keep it a secret, but after worsening significantly at the battle of the Ikeda-ya inn, he was found out due to a terrible coughing fit in which he coughed up large amounts of blood, meaning he didn't have long to live.
