Why after many years of using tampons is it really sore inserting or removing a tampon?
This could be due to vaginal dryness. Try using some KY Jelly on a tampon and see if insertion is better after doing so. If not go see your GP and ask for a test as it could be something else which is causing you pain when inserting a tampon.
