In short, AIDS stands for the Acquired immune deficiency syndrome. This is caused by the virus, HIV. HIV has a very high genetic variability and also replicates very, very fast once in a host. This makes it extremely hard or impossible to kill because the virus can constantly mutate. On top of that, HIV specifically infects cells of both the adaptive and innate immune systems (antibodies, phagocytes, etc). After time, HIV causes AIDS which is basically the total depletion of the host's cellular immunity.

What do antibodies to the aids virus indicate?

Antibodies to the AIDS virus indicates the person is HIV positive.

Can you have aids negative or positive?

Not exactly. "HIV positive" means that someone's test for HIV antibodies came back positive, i.e. that the antibodies are present and that the person has at least been exposed to, and is almost certainly infected with, the virus. AIDS, however, is a syndrome, or condition. There isn't a specific test for it, so the terms "positive" and "negative" have no real meaning. AIDS means that not only is the person infected, but the infection has progressed to the point that they are showing symptoms. You can be "HIV positive" (the test showed antibodies) or "HIV negative" (the test did not show antibodies), but not "AIDS positive" or "AIDS negative". Everyone with AIDS is (or should be, since HIV is the virus that causes AIDS) "HIV positive", but it's possible to be "HIV positive" for a considerable length of time before eventually developing AIDS.

Are people without AIDS against those with AIDS?

I would hope we all are against the virus, not the person. I certainly am not against someone because they have AIDS or HIV.

Someone whose blood contains antibodies to HIV is said to be?

HIV-positive. Being HIV-positive means that the individual has been exposed to the virus and their immune system has produced antibodies against it, which can be detected through blood testing. It does not necessarily mean they have developed symptoms of HIV or AIDS.

Is it false the first test given to determine the presence of aids antibodies is the western blot test?

Yes, it is false that the Western blot test is the first test given to determine the presence of AIDS antibodies. The initial screening test for HIV antibodies is typically an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). If the ELISA test is positive, a confirmatory test like the Western blot may then be used to verify the results.

Would you expect patients with lack of serum reactivity to have a fast or slow progression from hiv to aids?

Patients with a lack of serum reactivity may progress more rapidly from HIV to AIDS due to a weakened immune response and inability to develop antibodies against the virus. This lack of response may lead to faster progression of the disease.
