Patients that are in counseling can tell you things that, very often, have contradictions in their story. There can be contradictions between stated thought and feeling, contradictions between feeling and behavior, and on and on. And things that can complicate matters further is that the patient can feel two polar opposite feelings at the same time. Most times, patients are not aware they are doing this. In order to help clients address mental and emotional distress, it is extremely important that these inconsistencies be brought to their attention and addressed. If they are not, they can actually contribute in keeping the patient stuck in their problem.
