Hiccups are caused by uncontrolled spasms in the diaphragm (the thin piece of tissue located at the base of the lungs that makes them expand and contract). The phrenic nerve (located in the neck) controls the diaphragm and causes these spasms. When the phrenic nerve triggers a spasm the diaphragm contracts violently, resulting in a sudden inhaling of air aka a hiccup. The only full proof method I've found to get rid of hiccups is the following:

Step 1: Inhale deeply

Step 2: Hold the breath

Step 3: Drink one glass of water while holding the breath

Step 4: After drinking the water exhale extremely slowly

Step 5: Should hiccups not go away repeat steps 1-4

Another way is:

Step 1: fill your mouth with water (don't swallow)

Step 2: try to touch your toes (Try)

Step 3: then swallow if it doesn't work try it again
