The tapered shape of feces, or turds, is due to the peristaltic movement of the intestines during the digestive process. As waste moves through the colon, water is reabsorbed, causing the feces to become more solid and compact. The narrowing of the stool as it reaches the rectum is a result of the muscles in the colon squeezing and shaping the waste material into a tapered form for easier elimination.
