Because at a distance our eyes have a fixed focal point. This means that they eyes both look at the same location and cannot have a fixed point on more than two objects. You can pull closer and relax your eyes to look into both eyes but now you are nose to nose with that person. The reason behind this is depth perception. By using both eyes to find a fixed point, you can judge depth or distance to surrounding objects. Its just the way your brain analyzes location for awareness and movement.
