Women bleed during a process called menstruation; this occurs when an egg is released from either one or both of the ovaries and implants itself into the lining of the uterus, which accumulates during ovulation (when the egg is traveling through the fallopian tubes). If the egg or eggs do not become fertilized by sperm through sexual intercourse or another method of fertilization (usually artificial), then the lining of the uterine walls and the egg break apart and is expelled from the body through the vagina. ((If the egg is fertilized before the uterine wall breaks down, the egg will grow into a fetus, which develops into a baby. During pregnancy, women do not have their periods again until the baby is born or aborted.)) This process occurs once every month, although during the first couple of years after a girl's first period, menstruation may be irregular, and may be affected by hormonal contraceptives, diet, etc. After the first year or two, bleeding becomes lighter and more regular, but it depends on the individual. If you need more information, ask your doctor or a health teacher- they will be happy to answer your questions.
