The reason why your body twitches when you are falling asleep is because your are going to a relaxed motion. Usually this happens when you have had a stressful day, exhausted, or with little little sleep. When you start falling asleep sometimes you can feel it your self but most of the times you wont even realize until your partner tells the next day. Basically it is just your muscles relaxing after a long day and your body is finally getting the rest that it needs. You doze off right away and immediately your brain starts to slow down your breathing and the rate of your heart beat and those muscles of yours and the nerves start to relax as well. For example, if you ever watch documentaries of military boot camp and once the soldiers get a chance to sleep, and it is usually only 3 hours a night, you can see each soldier twitching due to the exhaustion of the muscles and the stress of very little sleep that your brain needs to function correctly.
