Ear wax is produced by glands in the outer ear canal to trap dust and other foreign particles from entering the ear. Its main purpose is to help protect the ear drum and the other sensitive parts of the ear from damage by outside particles.

Clean ears. The wax you see is build up from the wax inside your ear cleaning out the dirt.
A build up of ear wax. You should carefully remove it with a Q-tip dipped in EpiOtic (available at the Vet's office) or a dog ear cleaner from the pet store. Failure to keep your dog's ears clean and free from excess wax could lead to ear infections.
The ears might be infected or there might be ear mites involved. The vet would know for sure. Sometimes if your ears get warm this loosens any wax in your ears. Some people have more of a build up of wax than others so see your doctor and let them clean your ears properly.
The build up of ear wax causes pressure to the inner ear thus causing tinnitus.
To protect your ears.
Ear wax is secreted by the ceruminous glands of the ears. It functions to protect the ears from outside contaminants. Diseases do not spread well through ear wax, but it may be possible to catch diseases transmitted through body fluids via ear wax.
Ear wax, also known as cerumen, serves as a natural defense mechanism for the ears. It helps to trap dust, dirt, and other particles, preventing them from entering the ear canal and potentially causing damage or infection. Additionally, ear wax helps to lubricate and protect the delicate skin of the ear canal. Overall, ear wax plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and function of our ears.

ear wax and... something else.
because all of the wax has built up in your ear so the wax is acting like a shield in your ear to stop you from hearing.
You are correct to not want to use a Q-tip or your finger to try to remove ear wax build up other than on the outside parts of your ear. If you put things inside your ear, you can compact the wax and make it even harder to remove or push it against your ear drum which can cause damage to hearing. Q-tips can leave fibers in your ear that will make the wax also harder to remove. To properly remove wax build up from inside your ear, there are drops that you can put in your ear that help to soften and allow the wax to be irrigated to be removed. These kits are available at pharmacies, follow the directions on the package very carefully. If use of these does not remedy the problem, you may need to see a doctor for a professional ear irrigation.Do not "over clean" your ear canals. The wax is there for a purpose, and if you remove the normal amounts too frequently, you can leave yourself prone to ear infections. If the wax is not compacted and needing drops to clean it from your ears, clean only your external ears and let your body do the rest in its normal processes that keep your ears healthy.
