Shoes were initially given heels so that a riders foot would not slip through the stirrup. Fashion took over and now shoes generally have raised heels. During the 1970's "Earth shoes" (a brand name) became popular. Earth shoes had a "negative heel"; they raised the toes and lowered the heel.
