Why does a sunburn turn purple?

The redness in the skin in a sunburn is caused by the dilation of small blood vessels called capillaries in the skin. When the skin is damaged there is an inflammatory response that occurs, like other injuries to the body. There is a release of histamine to the skin that is the start of the inflammatory process. This inflammatory response is what triggers the dilation of the blood vessels and the pain.

Well, since your skin is sunburned, that means that it has little or no water left in that area and since it's really dry, it's irritated and begins to get red because that's what all skin does when it's irritated.

The skin initially goes red as blood rushes to the surface, partly to help radiate heat more effectively and partly to begin healing the damaged skin. It slowly goes brown because the skin produces more melanin in response to DNA damage.

It's a real burn. The pores trap the heat in the skin, and the blood vessels under it enlarge--making the blood flow to the area a lot more. which is why it's reddish and seems hot.

Being honest I have never seen or got a purple sun burn and i get them allot. If you got a purple sunburn I would say it was rare to get one but I am not a doctor .So see a doctor.

The suns UVA and UVB rays literally burn your skin! The heat sinks in to where ever you were sunburned, so it stays hot. Since the skin is burned it turns red.
