Why does the sun hurt your eyes if you look at it?

You get a pair of binoculars, cover one side, and point it at the Sun BUT don't look through the binoculars. Project the image on a sheet of paper (make sure the outside of the paper is dark) and there you have it! An alternative to the above is to make a pin-hole lens. Take two pieces of cardboard. At least one of them should be thin, one-layer cardboard (non-corrugated). Put a small hole in the middle of the thin piece. Hold it between the sun and the other piece, and the sun will pass through the hole and project onto the other piece. Experiment with distances and with the size of the hole. Make the hole as regular and round as possible.

It is advised not to look for prolonged periods directly at the sun.

First place why would you want to look at the sun. You and I know that when we try to bring the sun into focus it will hurt our eyes due to the rays that travels at 300,000 kilometers/second. Doing the math, the sun rays travels at the speed of 500 seconds, or 8 minutes and 20 seconds. It will hurt you indeed which might even damage your eye lens so be careful not to damage them.
