There might have been a bacteria or something of the like in it that you might be having an allergic reaction to.
It is possible that the dirt you were gathering contained ants or some other type of insect and they crawled on your arm biting and irritating your skin. It also may be a form of contact dermatitis from touching something in the dirt and scratching your arm. Eating dirt is not as uncommon as you might think but gathering it from just anywhere is not safe. Pica (eating inedible objects) specifically geophagia (eating dirt) can be medically managed and I would suggest (until you speak with your physician about this) you should purchase sterilized earth from a garden center. Please seek help from you doctor or clinic ASAP as Pica is often manifested during pregnancy.
