Like many people know, you heart pumps blood to your lungs where the red blood cells pick up oxygen then continues to take the oxygen to your muscles. Your muscles pulls out the oxygen, uses it and puts carbon dioxide in the red blood cells where your heart pumps it back to your lungs to drop off the CO2 where the cycle repeats. When you strain your muscles they need more oxygen so your heart has to work harder to get more oxygen to your muslces.
