The viruses that cause the common cold (there are over 200 kinds) are able to mutate easily and quickly into new forms that are not recognized by your immune system as the same, so your body has to go through the process of an immune response to create antibodies that "fit" the new version to make you well. Before you can develop immunity and before scientists can develop a vaccine for prevention of a type of cold virus, the virus mutates and those defenses are no longer effective.
