Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers is a book by Robert M. Sapolsky. The title of the book refers to a zebra who is being chased by a lion. As it is chased the stress response in its body is triggered. Its sympathetic nervous system kicks in and helps the zebra avoid being caught and eaten by the lion. This kind of stress response is acute so that, once the zebra gets away, the parasympathetic kicks back in and the zebra can recover quickly, thus avoiding an ulcer. Humans, on the other hand, suffer through chronic physical, psychological and social stresses that may ultimately end up causing them ulcers.
