It is not well remembered by the general public because it happened during WW1 in 1918 and most people who lived at that time are not still alive to remember. Those that are still alive might be over 90 years old with memory problems due to the aging process. Infectious disease specialists and epidemiologists do remember it and some continue to study it.
Spanish Influenza is still part of the curriculum in British schools. In the US it is briefly discussed in history classes, but not a lot of classroom time is devoted to it anymore.
One of the other main reasons that it isn't remembered well these days is because it is overshadowed by facts about WW1 when discussing that time period of history. Though millions of people world-wide died of Spanish Flu, people were and still are so concerned with the numbers of soldiers who gave their lives fighting during WW1, that they don't give as much time to those who died of a disease that is not very well known.
