The genioglossus muscle is the muscle of the tongue. it's
attached the base of the tongue to the inside
front of the jaw bone. It
pulls the tongue forward.
In the people with
obstructive sleep apnea, the genioglossus is more active in
holding the airway open at rest. If it relaxes during sleep,
the airway narrows and collapses.
as it keeps the airway open thus saves life, it's called a life saving muscle.

Genioglossus
The genioglossus muscle runs from the chin to the tongue. See related link for an image.
The genioglossus is a muscle located in the tongue, primarily responsible for its movement. Its main functions include protruding the tongue forward, depressing the central part of the tongue, and contributing to the overall positioning of the tongue during speaking and swallowing. Additionally, it plays a role in maintaining an open airway during sleep by preventing the tongue from obstructing the throat.
Styloglossus elevates and retracts tongue Genioglossus protrudes and depresses centre of tongue Hyoglossus depresses tongue Palatoglossus elevates back of tongue and depresses soft palate and moves palatopharyngeal folds to midline.

The tongue is considered the strongest muscle in the body. It has four paired intrinsic muscles that originate and insert within the tongue, running along its length. They have no boney attachment. And they make up the body of the tongue.1.The superior longitudinal muscle runs along the superior surface of the tongue under the mucous membrane, and elevates the tip.2.The inferior longitudinal muscle lines the sides of the tongue.3.The verticalis muscle is located in the middle of the tongue. This is the largest.4.The transversus muscle divides the tongue at the middle.
They are all extrinsic muscles of the tongue, used for crude movement.
There are two types of tongue muscles : 1. intrinsic muscles: -superior longitudinal muscle -vertical muscle -transverse muscle -inferior longitudinal muscle 2. extrinsic muscles: -genioglossus -hyoglossus -palatoglossus -styloglossus Which makes 8 muscles.
The human tongue is made up of 8 different muscles. These are all classified as either intrinsic or extrinsic muscles. The extrinsic muscles are the genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus, and palatoglossus. The intrinsic muscles are the superior and inferior longitudinal muscles, the verticalis muscle, and the transversus muscle.
