Usually it's hard to break a habit unless you stay away from it for about a month or so. And learn from others. So... yes, it is hard to stay away from smoking unless you want something bad happen to your lungs which can make you die from smoking.

Smoking is a horrible habit and is also extremely hard to quit. There are numerous things on the market now that will assist your father in trying to quit smoking, but first he has to want to quit. There are things such as Nicorette gum or lozenges as well as a nicotine patch that he can use to help him.
It's never too late to quit smoking. Of course we can't know if you smoking so far has had any effect.
