It was considered "bad" when first discovered, mostly because it was a new subtype of flu without any effective vaccines already produced for it and it was expected that there would be few, if any, people who had any resistance to it or antibodies previously developed to fight it. People had died and they were young and healthy as opposed to the typical flu-related death which strikes more of the elderly, very young or ill. It also happens to be a type of flu that is very easily transmitted from person to person so the spread was rapid and wide, eventually affecting people in every country of the world as a true pandemic. Luckily, the symptoms for most people turned out to be fairly mild and the death toll was not as high as was originally feared especially once the vaccine was very quickly developed and provided to the public around the world. Now it is considered more comparable to the usual seasonal flu types, because it has a proven, effective, and safe vaccination available to prevent it.

It is flu season right now. Get your seasonal flu vaccination to be protected and to protect others from getting the H1N1/09 flu from you if you catch it.
